Big changes for Wrigley Field

CHICAGO, June 18 (UPI) -- The Chicago Tribune Co., owner of baseball's Cubs, is planning big changes at Wrigley Field to add 1,980 bleacher seats and a retail-parking structure.

Tribune executives formally submitted the proposed ballpark renovation to the Chicago Planning Commission detailing a bleacher expansion and a triangular four-story multi-use structure with stores, restaurants and 400 parking spaces to be built on Clark Street, west of the stadium.

The ivy-covered brick walls and manually-operated scoreboard at Wrigley Field are landmarks, but the team can make substantial changes with city permission.

"This represents the final pieces of the plan we really proposed starting in 2001 to improve Wrigley Field and the campus surrounding the ballpark, to add amenities and things that will help our fans, our players and our community," said Mike Lufrano, Cubs vice president of community affairs.

The site of the proposed multi-use garage is occupied by a car wash and doughnut shop.
