Ueberroth to lead U.S. Olympic board

COLORADO SPRINGS, June 15 (UPI) -- Former Major League Baseball Commissioner Peter Ueberroth has been named chairman of the 11-member U.S. Olympic Committee board of directors.

Ueberroth, 66, was also president of the 1984 Los Angeles Olympic Organizing Committee and is considered an experienced leader with solid international credentials, the Washington Post said Tuesday.

Ueberroth, whose appointment was first reported by the Los Angeles Times, was named to one of four independent director posts along with Harold Shapiro, former Princeton University president and current professor of economics and public affairs; Stephanie Streeter, president, chairman and chief executive officer of Banta Corp. and a former Stanford basketball player; and Erroll Davis Jr., chairman and CEO of Aliant Energy.

Jair Lynch, a two-time Olympian in gymnastics and silver medalist in 1996, was named to one of two posts reserved for athlete representatives along with rower Mary McCagg, a 1992 and 1996 Olympian.

The unpaid volunteer board held its first official meeting Monday morning in Colorado Springs, Colo.
