NOTTINGHAM, England, June 14 (UPI) -- Two-time champion Jonas Bjorkman advanced to the second round of the Nottingham Open Monday with a straight-sets win over Aisam-Ul-Haq Qureshi.
Bjorkman beat Qureshi of Pakistan, 7-6 (7-5), 6-3, at this grasscourt event as the Swede prepares for Wimbledon, which begins next Monday. He won this tournament in 1998 and 2002.
Sweden's Robin Soderling will be Bjorkman's next opponent after a 7-6 (7-5), 3-6, 6-2 win over Spain's David Ferrer.
Fifth-seeded Vincent Spadea of the United States and No. 7 Hicham Arazi of Morocco also moved into the second round. Spadea defeated Frenchman Gregory Carraz, 6-3, 7-5, and Arazi dispatched British qualifier Lee Childs, 6-3, 6-3.
Also, South African Wayne Ferreira topped Spain's Alberto Martin, 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5).
Second seed Mardy Fish withdrew Monday with a recurring hip injury.
