Top seed loses in Birmingham tennis

BIRMINGHAM, England, June 9 (UPI) -- Japan's Shinobu Asagoe ousted top-seeded Nadia Petrova of Russia Wednesday in the second round of the DFS classic, a grasscourt tournament in England.

Asagoe beat Petrova 6-4, 2-6, 6-4.

Fourth-seeded Bulgarian Magdalena Maleeva won 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 over Anca Barna of Germany and American qualifier Shenay Perry beat Jelena Dokic, the fifth seed from Serbia-Montenegro, 7-4, 7-6 (7-4).

Akiko Morigami of Japan advanced when her opponent, seventh-seeded Eleni Daniilidou of Greece, retired in the third set with a leg strain.

Other winners included No. 9 Emilie Loit of France and No. 16 Maria Sanchez Lorenzo of Spain.
