MLB: Houston 5, Chicago Cubs 1

CHICAGO, June 2 (UPI) -- Forty-one-year-old Roger Clemens became the National League's first eight-game winner in 2004 Wednesday as the Houston Astros beat the Chicago Cubs 5-1.

The win was the 318th of Clemens' career, tying Phil Niekro for 14th on the all-time list.

Clemens (8-0) allowed five hits and a run in seven innings, striking out five and walking two.

The game was tied 1-1 in the fourth inning but the Astros went ahead to stay in the fifth on a triple by Jeff Kent and single by Lance Berkman.

Mike Lamb and Brad Ausmus drove in runs with singles in a Houston rally in the seventh.

Matt Clement (6-4) was the loser.
