MEMPHIS, May 27 (UPI) -- PGA Tour rookie Vaughn Taylor fired a 5-under 66 in windy conditions Thursday to take the lead after one round of the St. Jude Classic.
Held in May for the first time since 1976, this year's event features none of the top 10 money leaders and only four 2004 tournament winners.
But the lack of established stars likely will not bother Taylor, who earned a spot on tour this year by finishing 11th on the Nationwide Tour money list in 2003.
His round included a chip-in, a series of long putts and a three-putt on his final hole.
Taylor is 178th on the money list with $83,306 and has not finished higher than 25th in any PGA event since turning professional in 1999.
He had a one-shot edge over defending champion David Toms and veteran Paul Stankowski. Stewart Cink, Hirofumi Miyase and Zhang Lian-wei all shot 68.
John Daly, the top money winner (15th) participating in this event, had a 71 and was tied for 21st.
