MLB: New York Yankees 12, Baltimore 9

BALTIMORE, May 26 (UPI) -- Gary Sheffield homered and drove in six runs Wednesday night as the New York Yankees outslugged Baltimore, 12-9.

The game featured 30 hits and saw the Yankees answer a six-run sixth inning by the Orioles with five runs in their next at-bat.

The Orioles endured their season-high sixth straight defeat.

Hideki Matsui and Tony Clark also homered for the Yankees, who improved to 57-27 all-time at Camden Yards.

A large chunk of the production came from Sheffield, who drove in 132 runs for Atlanta last season but was hitting just .265 with three homers and 19 RBI entering the game.

The veteran outfielder hit a three-run homer in the fifth and capped the seventh-inning outburst with a two-run single. Sheffield could have had an even bigger night if not for center fielder Luis Matos, who robbed him of at least two RBI with a spectacular catch in the third.

The six RBI were one short of his career high.
