PALO ALTO, Calif., May 25 (UPI) -- Less than two months after signing a five-year contract with Nevada, Trent Johnson was named men's basketball coach by Stanford on Tuesday.
Johnson replaced Mike Montgomery who stepped down after 18 years at the Pacific-10 Conference school to take over as coach of the NBA's Golden State Warriors last Friday.
Johnson agreed to a contract worth more than $450,000 annually with Nevada on March 30, a day after interviewing for the job at Utah. But he had an out clause in his contract and exercised it for the right to coach at Stanford.
The 47-year-old Johnson was an assistant for three seasons at Stanford before heading to Nevada in 1999.
This past season, Johnson led Nevada to a 25-9 record, the Western Athletic Conference tournament title and a run to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16. The Wolf Pack upset Michigan State and second-seeded Gonzaga before beaten by Georgia Tech.
