Padres place Wells on disabled list

PITTSBURGH, May 18 (UPI) -- The San Diego Padres on Tuesday placed veteran lefthander David Wells on the 15-day disabled list with injuries to his right wrist and left palm.

Wells gave up three runs and eight hits in six innings of Sunday's 4-2 loss to the Chicago Cubs, then reportedly cut his right wrist and left palm in an accident at home later in the day.

In his first season with the Padres, Wells is 2-4 with a 3.78 ERA in eight starts.

Wells, who turns 41 on Thursday, won a combined 34 games for the New York Yankees the last two seasons before signing a one-year, $1.25 million deal with the Padres.
