BALTIMORE, May 16 (UPI) -- Sidney Ponson pitched a five-hitter and Javy Lopez had three hits Sunday night as the Baltimore Orioles defeated the Anaheim Angels, 4-0.
Ponson was 0-3 in his previous four starts, getting ripped for 24 runs and 38 hits in 21 innings. To make matters worse, he had to face a team that scored 47 runs in its last six games.
But Ponson (3-3) shut down the Angels, allowing just five singles and a walk while striking out four en route to his second complete of the season and third career shutout.
Lopez went 3-for-4 and Jerry Hairston Jr. knocked in two runs for Baltimore.
Angels starter Kelvim Escobar (2-2) gave up three runs and seven hits in 6 1/3 innings. He lost for the first time in seven career decisions at Baltimore.
Rookie Casey Kotchman had two hits for the Angels, who completed a 3-3 road trip.
