Smarty Jones early favorite at Preakness

BALTIMORE, May 12 (UPI) -- Kentucky Derby winner Smarty Jones will face 10 challengers in the Preakness Stakes, although the field could be reduced by Thursday.

Smarty Jones drew the seventh post Wednesday and was installed as the 8-5 morning-line favorite for Saturday's second leg of horse racing's Triple Crown.

The Pennsylvania-bred has won all seven of his races and became the first unbeaten horse to win the Kentucky Derby since Triple Crown champion Seattle Slew in 1977.

Stewart Elliott, who was credited with a perfect ride in the Derby, again will be aboard Smarty Jones.

Assuming the betting public remains enamored with Smarty Jones, he will try to become the first favorite to win the Derby and Preakness since Spectacular Bid in 1979.

One horse expected to challenge Saturday is The Cliff's Edge, the morning-line Derby favorite who finished fifth at Churchill Downs. But The Cliff's Edge developed a sore right foot Wednesday morning, putting his status in doubt.
