MLB: Minnesota 5, Seattle 1

SEATTLE, May 5 (UPI) -- Carlos Silva pitched eight innings and Jacque Jones hit a two-run homer Wednesday night, lifting Minnesota over Seattle, 5-1.

Acquired in an offseason trade from Philadelphia for Eric Milton, who had been a staple of the Minnesota rotation since 1998, Silva has made a successful conversion from reliever to starter.

One of the biggest surprises of the season, Silva (5-0) won for the fifth time in six starts as he limited the Mariners to one run and five hits in the longest outing of his career.

The 24-year-old righthander walked one and struck out five while improving to 13-1 in his career.

The big effort by Silva was a much-needed one after the Twins used seven relievers in Tuesday night's 16-inning loss.

Jones' fifth homer of the season with none out in the fourth inning off Joel Pineiro (1-4) gave the Twins a 3-0 lead.
