MLB: San Diego 2, Atlanta 0

ATLANTA, May 5 (UPI) -- David Wells allowed five hits in seven-plus innings Wednesday night, walking none and striking out six as San Diego defeated Atlanta, 2-0.

The 40-year-old Wells (2-2), who signed with the Padres in the winter after two years with the New York Yankees, did not face a single three-ball count.

The Padres pushed across the only run they needed off Jaret Wright (2-2) in the fifth. Sean Burroughs doubled with one out, moved to third on Mark Loretta's single to right and scored on Brian Giles' bloop single.

Wells faced his only threat in the sixth after first baseman Phil Nevin committed a two-base throwing error on Rafael Furcal's leadoff bunt. Furcal moved up on Damon Hollins' sacrifice.

After striking out Mark DeRosa, Wells hit Marcus Giles after his cap flew off. The cap got in Wells' face, but he followed through with the pitch rather than risk balking in the tying run. Wells then struck out Andrew Jones swinging.
