NEW YORK, May 5 (UPI) -- Shane Spencer's three-run homer highlighted a six-run eighth inning Wednesday night that gave the New York Mets an 8-2 win over San Francisco.
Spencer upstaged Mike Piazza, who established a career record for home runs by a catcher with his 352nd. He surpassed Carlton Fisk for the No. 1 spot.
The game was tied at 2-2 in the eighth when Giants reliever Felix Rodriguez (1-2) began his second inning. Todd Zeile singled with one out and Piazza flied out before lefthander Scott Eyre replaced Rodriguez and surrendered a single to Karim Garcia.
Closer Matt Herges replaced Eyre and faced Spencer, who greeted the reliever with his second homer as a Met to open a 5-2 lead.
Mike Cameron added a two-run blast off Herges and rookie Kaz Matsui stroked an RBI single off David Aardsma for an 8-2 cushion.
