McDowell birdied the 14th hole of the third and final round just seconds after the siren sounded to suspend play for the day. He was at 18-under par, along with Havret, who had two holes to complete.

Former British Open runner-up Thomas Levet of France was a shot back with four holes left in the battle for the $160,000 top prize.

Ian Poulter of England, who is seeking his third Italian Open title in five years, was at 13-under with two holes remaining.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms already had reduced the tournament to 54 holes. Another storm Sunday afternoon meant the first Monday finish on the European Tour since 2001.
