PRAGUE, Czech Republic, April 30 (UPI) -- Roberto Luongo stopped 33 shots Friday in leading Canada to a 2-0 victory over Latvia in the World Hockey Championships.
Luongo has picked up where he left off in the regular season, where he is a finalist for the Vezina Trophy as the NHL's best goaltender despite posting a losing record for the Florida Panthers.
Bergeron opened the scoring at 12:38 of the first period, picking up a loose puck behind the net and beating goaltender Sergei Naumov with a wraparound.
In other qualifying play Friday, Sweden and Finland skated to a 1-1 tie. St. Louis Blues defenseman Christian Backman scored with under a minute remaining to earn the Swedes a point.
The United States will play Russia Saturday.
