Braves place Chipper Jones on injured list

SAN FRANCISCO, April 26 (UPI) -- Atlanta Braves slugger Chipper Jones, who has been sidelined a week by a strained right hamstring, Monday was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

The star left fielder has not played since April 18, when he suffered the injury chasing down a triple by Luis Castillo of the Florida Marlins.

The Braves hoped to have Jones back this week but decided to play it safe by placing him on the DL, retroactive to April 19.

Just the fourth player in National League history to record eight straight 100-RBI seasons, Jones is batting .314 with three home runs and six RBI in 10 games.

The 32-year-old switch-hitter is a career .309 batter with 283 homers and 949 RBI in 1,415 games.

To fill Jones' roster spot, the Braves recalled infielder Mike Hessman from Class AAA Richmond of the International League.
