MLB: Arizona 12, San Diego 7

PHOENIX, April 25 (UPI) -- Matt Kata had three hits and four RBI and Richie Sexson homered twice Sunday as the Arizona Diamondbacks pounded the San Diego Padres, 12-7.

Arizona's Elmer Dessens had not gone longer than 5 2/3 innings in any of his three previous starts and surrendered 25 hits in 15 1/3 innings. He put Arizona in an early 2-0 hole but the Diamondbacks scored four times in the third, fifth and sixth innings to turn the game into a rout.

Sexson's seventh homer of the season capped the four-run third inning, Kata's two-run base hit highlighted the fifth and Danny Bautista and Kata had two-run singles in the sixth.

San Diego starter Brian Lawrence was tagged for four runs -- all unearned -- and seven hits in four innings. Jason Szuminski followed and allowed four runs.

Mark Loretta had three hits and Ramon Hernandez had three RBI for San Diego.
