Irwin earns first 1994 title at Legends

SAVANNAH, Ga., April 25 (UPI) -- Hale Irwin claimed his first title of the season and record 39th on the Champions Tour Sunday by winning the Liberty Mutual Legends of Golf.

Irwin had not finished better than seventh in six starts this season, but a 1-under-par 71 was enough for him to edge Gil Morgan, who bogeyed the final hole, and Gary Koch by a stroke.

With a 54-hole total of 11-under 205, Irwin collected the $345,000, allowing him to jump more than 15 spots into the top five on the senior money list with over $530,000.

Morgan had a share of the lead when Irwin bogeyed the 16th hole, but he gave back the stroke at the 18th and settled for his 21st runner-up finish on the Champions Tour. He is tied for fourth all-time with 23 titles, one this season.
