NHL: DEtroit 2, Nashville 1

DETROIT, April 10 (UPI) -- Mathieu Schneider had a power-play goal with 2:45 left in the third period Saturday as Detroit took a 2-0 lead over Nashville with a 2-1 win.

The two teams are playing an NHL Western Conference quarterfinals series.

Goalless in 34 postseason contests since Game Three of the 1993 Stanley Cup Finals, Schneider scored from just above the right faceoff circle.

Detroit, which led the NHL during the season with 89 third-period goals, has a 4-0 advantage in the final period of this series.

Brendan Shanahan and Tomas Holmstrom each had a pair of assists and Manny Legace stopped 27 shots to help the Red Wings maintain home-ice advantage.

Vladimir Orszagh scored the lone goal for Nashville, which hosts its first playoff game on Sunday afternoon.
