Rose keeps lead, Arnie says farewell

AUGUSTA, Ga., April 9 (UPI) -- Justin Rose maintained a two-shot lead at the Masters Friday while some of the game's great players were poised for a weekend charge.

The second round of the opening major golf tournament of the year, however, was highlighted by a farewell appearance from 74-year-old Arnold Palmer.

Playing in his 50th consecutive Masters, Palmer received constant applause as he walked the fairways en route to his second straight 84.

Rose shot a 1-under 71 for a two-day total of 6-under 138 -- two shots ahead of Alex Cejka and two-time champion Jose Maria Olazabal.

Phil Mickelson, seeking his first major title, shot a 3-under 33 over the final nine holes for a 69 that left him tied for fourth at 141. K.J. Choi joined Mickelson at that number while Davis Love, Ernie Els, Fred Couples, Chris DiMarco and Charles Howell were all at 142.

Tiger Woods rallied with a 69 that left him at 144 -- six shots off the pace.

Among those missing the cut were defending champion Mike Weir, Darren Clarke, Colin Montgomerie and John Daly.
