14 named to College Football Hall of Fame

SOUTH BEND, Ind., April 6 (UPI) -- Two coaches and 12 players were named to the College Football Hall of Fame Tuesday.

The coaches are LaVell Edwards, whose Brigham Young teams played in 22 bowl games and won the 1984 national title, and George Welch, who coached at Navy and Virginia.

The 2004 selections were announced by the National Football Foundation.

Players named include quarterbacks Andre Ware, the Houston star who won the Heisman Trophy in 1989, and Joe Kapp, who played at California in the 1950s.

Two running backs also were selected -- Lydell Mitchell who played for Penn State (1969-81 and Bob Anderson of Army (1957-59).

Also joining the Hall of Fame roster were tight ends Jim Mandich of Michigan (1967-69) and Charles Young of Southern California (1970-72) and punter Ray Guy, who played at Southern Mississippi (1970-72).

Defensive players enshrined were Oklahoma middle guard Tony Casillas (1982-85), Auburn tackle Tracy Rocker (1985-88), defensive back Jack Tatum of Ohio State (1968-70) and linebackers Frank Emanuel of Tennessee (1963-65) and Wayne Harris of Arkansas.
