WASHINGTON, April 3 (UPI) -- In the MLS season opener, Jaime Moreno had a goal and assist Saturday to lead D.C. United to a 2-1 victory over defending

champion San Jose.

Freddy Adu, 14, came in as a reserve for Washington to become the youngest professional athlete in the modern era.

Adu finished with nine touches.

"My goal is to become one of the greatest players that ever played the sport," he said. "I have a long way to go."

Earnie Stewart's free kick found Moreno in the center of the penalty area. The forward headed the ball past goalkeeper Pat Onstad for his 70th career strike.

The Earthquakes retaliated Seven minutes later when D.C. goal keeper Nick Rimando hauled down Brian Mullan, giving Ronnie Ekelund a penalty attempt.

Moreno put United back on top in the 39th minute, splitting the defense and allowing Alecko Eskandarian to set up for a volley past Onstad.
