Expos acquire catcher Diaz from Rangers

MELBOURNE, Fla., April 3 (UPI) -- The Montreal Expos added some experience at catcher on Saturday, acquiring Einar Diaz from the Texas Rangers.

The Expos obtained Diaz, righthander Justin Echols and cash from the Rangers for catcher-infielder Josh McKinley and righthander Chris Young.

The 31-year-old Diaz spent last season in Texas and hit .257 with four homers and 35 RBI. He was in Cleveland from 1996 to 2002 and is a .259 hitter with 19 homers and 174 RBI in 557 career games.

Montreal got catcher Brian Schneider in the offseason but he hit just .230 last season.

Echols, 23, was a combined 5-9 with a 3.48 ERA in 32 appearances at Class AA Frisco and Class A Stockton.

McKinley, 24, hit .286 with 15 homers and 75 RBI at Class AA Harrisburg.

Young, 24, was a combined 9-6 with a 3.11 ERA for Harrisburg and Class A Brevard County in 2003.
