DETROIT, April 2 (UPI) -- Physical left wing Tomas Holmstrom Friday agreed to a three-year contract extension of undisclosed value with the Detroit Red Wings.

Holmstrom missed 15 games from Nov. 27 to Dec. 28 with a separated shoulder.

"Tomas plays with great heart and works tremendously hard in the tough areas of the ice to help us win," said Red Wings general manager Ken Holland. "He would have been an unrestricted free agent this summer and we're very happy to be able to keep him in the Red Wings uniform."

In his seventh NHL season, Holmstrom has 96 goals -- 46 on the power play, and 140 assists in his career.

The 31-year-old Swede was drafted by Detroit in 1994.
