Stevens in doubt for playoffs

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J., March 29 (UPI) -- New Jersey General Manager Lou Lamoriello said Monday team captain Scott Stevens was not yet ready to return to the Devils.

Stevens has been suffering from post-concussion syndrome since the first week of January. He has missed 40 games and his status for the upcoming playoffs remains in doubt.

"Only when it is determined that he is at 100 percent will he participate with the team," Lamoriello said. "He will continue to work out both on and off the ice. There is no timetable for his return."

Stevens has been at the core a team that has won three Stanley Cups since 1995. Unil this incident, the 14-time All-Star had not missed more than seven regular-season games since the 1991-92 season -- his first with New Jersey.

The Devils began Monday in a tie with Ottawa for fifth in the Eastern Conference, just two points behind first-place Philadelphia in the Atlantic Division with three games remaining.
