Scott leads, Woods struggles

PONTE VEDRE BEACH, Fla., March 25 (UPI) -- Adam Scott, who patterns his swing after that of Tiger Woods, owned the lead Thursday after one round of the $8 million Players Championship.

Woods, however, struggled with his own swing and faced the possibility of missing a cut for the first time in 120 tournaments.

Scott fired a 7-under 65 in relatively calm morning conditions at the TPC-Sawgrass course to take a one-shot lead over Duffy Waldorf and Kevin Sutherland. K.J. Choi, Thomas Bjorn and Bob Burns shared fourth place at 67 while Ernie Els and Kenny Perry were among those at 68.

John Daly, trying to remain in the top 10 on the money list and thus earn an invitation to the Masters, shot a bogey-free 69. Leading money winner Vijay Singh and Phil Mickelson were in the group at 70.

Woods suffered through a 3-over 75, his fourth straight over-par round, and was tied for 108th place. Defending champion Davis Love, suffering from a sore back, played the first eight holes in 6-over and shot a 77.
