Garrison Hearst joins Broncos

DENVER, March 25 (UPI) -- Veteran running back Garrison Hearst signed a one-year contract Thursday with the Denver Broncos.

The 33-year-old Hearst, who was waived earlier in March by San Francisco, has rushed for 7,883 yards in his 11-year NFL career.

"He's explosive. He's still got a lot of mileage left in his legs," said Broncos' General Manager Ted Sundquist.

Denver had been looking for a back since trading Clinton Portis to the Washington Redskins for cornerback Champ Bailey.

Hearst will try to win the starting job for Denver and is likely to share running duties with Quentin Griffin.

Hearst rushed for 2,946 yards and caught 124 passes for the 49ers over the past three seasons.
