RALEIGH, N.C., March 18 (UPI) -- Highlights of Thursday's NCAA Tournament action:
-- The theme of the opening day of the first round was that a number of lower seeds had a chance for an upset but only a few came through. Manhattan pulled off a 75-60 surprise of Florida and Nevada ousted Michigan State, 92-66. But Texas-El Paso, Virginia Commonwealth, Southern Illinois, Brigham Young and Air Force missed excellent opportunities.
-- The top seeds had no trouble with St. Joseph's, Stanford and Duke all coasting. The Cardinal had only a narrow lead early in the second half before routing Texas-San Antonio, 71-45.
-- Teams from the ACC won all four of their games with North Carolina State and Georgia Tech set to play on Friday. The Big East was 3-0 and the Big 12 was 2-0.
-- Two interesting second-round matchups were established with Maryland set to play Syracuse on Saturday and St. Joseph's ready to take on Texas Tech. Syracuse and Maryland are the two most recent NCAA champs while outspoken coaches Phil Martelli and Bob Knight will be meeting.
