ATLANTA, March 17 (UPI) -- Rookie Derek Roy scored on a seemingly harmless shot 15 seconds into overtime Wednesday night as Buffalo downed Atlanta, 4-3.
Atlanta goaltender Pasi Nurminen was playing his 23rd consecutive game and making his 16th start as the Thrashers hoped to stay alive in the playoff race.
Defenseman Andy Sutton helped out by scoring a pair of goals to give Atlanta a 3-1 lead early in the third period.
But after leading scorer Daniel Briere left with an undisclosed injury following a hard check by Sutton, the Sabres tallied twice in an 84-second span to draw even.
Selected 32nd overall in the 2001 draft, Roy carried down the left side early in overtime and unleashed a slap shot from above the left faceoff circle.
After hitting Nurminen in the chest, the puck bounced behind the Finnish goaltender and across the line for Roy's third game-winner of the season.
