VALENCIA, Calif., March 14 (UPI) -- Gil Morgan claimed his 23rd career Champions Tour victory Sunday, posting a two-stroke triumph at the SBC Classic.
Morgan birdied four of the opening 11 holes to build a four-stroke lead and had a 3-under-par 69 to finish the 54-hole event at 14-under 202.
"Dr. Gil," who has a degree in optometry, moved into sole possession of fifth place on the tour's all-time victory list, moving within one win of Bob Charles and two of Miller Barber. Hale Irwin leads with 38, nine more than Lee Trevino.
Larry Nelson finished two strokes off the pace. Morgan bogeyed the 17th hole and Nelson eagled the 18th.
Nelson finished at 12-under 204. Peter Jacobsen was third in his Champions Tour debut at 205, with Joe Inman and Australian Graham Marsh at 206.
