NHL: San Jose 5, NY Islanders 4

SAN JOSE, Calif., March 12 (UPI) -- Jonathan Cheechoo's second goal gave San Jose a two-goal lead Thursday night and the Sharks held on to down the New York Islanders, 5-4.

San Jose halted a three-game losing streak and extended its lead in the Pacific Division over Dallas to three points. The Islanders saw their winless skid reach six games.

The Sharks scored three unanswered goals in a four-goal second period with Cheechoo tipping in a shot by Brad Stuart for a 3-1 lead.

New York closed within 4-3 before Cheechoo scored on the player play 1:59 into the third period. Michael Peca scored shorthanded midway through the period to account for the final margin.

The Islanders outshot the Sharks, 37-27.
