NEW ORLEANS, March 5 (UPI) -- LeBron James scored eight of his 19 points in the fourth quarter Friday night in carrying Cleveland to an 88-85 victory over New Orleans.
James hit the go-ahead three-pointer with 1:22 to play.
Led by the 19-year-old James, the Cavaliers are trying to make the playoffs for the first time in six years. Three of their top six players have less than two years in the NBA and very few have experienced winning in the postseason.
The inexperienced Cavaliers hung tough to pick up a key road win.
After two free throws by Jamal Mashburn gave the Hornets an 83-81 lead, Jeff McInnis ran down a deflection in the backcourt, dribbled into the frontcourt and whipped a pass to James, whose jumper from the left corner gave Cleveland the lead for good.
Mashburn threw away a pass and Eric Williams hit a jumper for an 86-83 edge with 47 seconds to go.
