Jets sign free agent McCareins

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y., March 5 (UPI) -- The New York Jets on Friday acquired wide receiver Justin McCareins from Tennessee for a second-round pick in next month's draft.

More than $17 million over the salary cap, the Titans already have lost star defensive end Jevon Kearse and tackle Robaire Smith to free agency.

McCareins, a restricted free agent, became the latest to leave the organization.

A 2001 fourth-round pick, McCareins' numbers have increased each season. Last year, he moved into a starting role opposite Derrick Mason and had career highs with 47 catches for 813 yards and seven touchdowns.

Overall, McCareins has 69 receptions for 1,202 yards and nine touchdowns in 36 NFL games.

In New York, McCareins should start alongside speedster Santana Moss. The Jets still have veteran Curtis Conway on the roster, but he is expected to be released.
