Kareem joins Knicks basketball ops staff

NEW YORK, March 4 (UPI) -- Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, the NBA's all-time leading scorer, has joined the basketball operations staff of the New York Knicks, the team announced Thursday.

Abdul-Jabbar will be involved in player evaluation, scouting and other duties, said Isiah Thomas, the Knicks' president of basketball operations.

Abdul-Jabbar, a New York native, played 20 years in the NBA, retiring in 1989.

"Kareem set the standard of excellence in professional basketball, and it is a pleasure to be able to add him to our staff and bring him back to New York," Thomas said. "His knowledge of basketball will be invaluable to this franchise as we work our way back to the top of the NBA."

Abdul-Jabbar scored 38,387 points, won six Most Valuable Player awards and played in 19 All-Star games.

He played six seasons with the Milwaukee Bucks and 14 with the Los Angeles Lakers.
