"The addition of Sergei makes us a better hockey club," said General Manager Mike O'Connell. "He is one of the premier offensive defenseman in the game and that was an element that we felt needed upgrading on our team."

To get Gonchar, 29, Boston gave Washington 21-year-old defenseman Morrisonn and first- and second-round draft picks in 2004.

Other Capitals stars traded this winter were Jaromir Jagr, Peter Bondra and Robert Lang.
