UNIONDALE, N.Y., Feb. 26 (UPI) -- The New York Rangers completed a season series sweep of the New York Islanders Thursday night, scoring early and often en route to a 6-3 triumph.
Jaromir Jagr and Chris Simon scored two goals apiece, helping the Rangers to their sixth win in as many meetings with the Islanders this season and their third sweep of the Isles in 32 years.
In Tom Renney's coaching debut with the Rangers, they scored 2:39 into the game, had a 3-0 lead at 10:05 of the first period and made it 6-0 with 13:11 left in the second.
Renney took over when Glen Sather stepped down Wednesday to concentrate on his duties as general manager.
Brian Leetch had a goal and two assists for the Rangers, who will likely miss the playoffs for the seventh consecutive year. They trail the Islanders by 12 points for the final Eastern Conference playoff berth.
