NCAA places St. Bonaventure on probation

INDIANAPOLIS, Feb. 19 (UPI) -- The NCAA Committee on Infractions placed St. Bonaventure on three years probation Thursday for violations in the men's basketball program.

Thursday's finding may have brought an end to the scandal that rocked the upstate New York school last season, resulting in the forfeiting of eight games, the firing of Coach Jan van Breda Kolff and the resignation of Athletic Director Gothard Lane.

The NCAA imposed other penalties, including the reduction of scholarships by three over the next two years. Two were taken away this academic year as part of self-imposed penalties.

The scandal stemmed from the revelation that transfer student Jamil Terrell was allowed to play despite holding nothing more than a welding certificate. He was declared ineligible last February.

The Bonnies are ineligible for any postseason competition this season, including the Atlantic 10 Conference tournament. They are just 6-16 this season under first-year coach Anthony Solomon.
