Americans lose soccer friendly

AMSTERDAM, Netherlands, Feb. 18 (UPI) -- The Netherlands edged the United States, 1-0, in a soccer friendly Wednesday as Arjen Robben scored the game's only goal in the 56th minute.

Rushing into the box from the left, Robben controlled a well-timed pass by Wilfried Bouma, shook off Frankie Hejduk and booted the ball past Kasey Keller.

The Netherlands dominated the first half as Ruud van Nistelrooy had two goals disallowed. He gained control of a deflected long-distance shot in the 13th minute but the linesman had ruled offside long before the Manchester United striker found the back of the net.

In the 37th minute, van Nistelrooy headed home a free kick from the right -- only to find himself being cautioned for shovelling.

The Americans got off their only shot in the 20th minute when Lewis tried to catch Edwin van der Saar out of position after the goalie had fired a bad pass. His shot did not come close.
