NHL: Detroit 2, Edmonton 1

DETROIT, Feb. 16 (UPI) -- Manny Legace made 29 saves and came within six minutes of his second shutout Monday as Detroit held on for a 2-1 victory over Edmonton.

The Oilers were held without a shot in the second period.

The third man in Detroit's jumbled goaltending situation this season, Legace benefited from the Red Wings' best defensive period in more than eight years. Inactive in the second, he stopped Georges Laraque on a breakaway early in the third, then plucked Ethan Moreau's rebound with 121/2 minutes remaining.

Legace lost his shutout bid with 5:43 left as rookie Jarret Stoll beat him on a power play. But he turned aside the other 12 shots in the final period.

Kris Draper opened the scoring at 13:37 of the first period with his fifth shorthanded goal of the season and defenseman Mathieu Schneider got the eventual game-winner with 6:41 left in the second.
