Roddick, Agassi advance in San Jose

SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 14 (UPI) -- Andy Roddick got past Joachim Johansson, 6-3, 7-6 (9-7), Friday in the quarterfinals of the Siebel Open.

The reigning U.S. Open champion fired 27 aces and served at 72 percent, but needed to save a set point with an ace in the second-set tiebreaker.

In his first semifinal of the year, Roddick will play countryman Robert Kendrick, who got past Cyril Saulnier, 7-6 (8-6), 4-6, 6-3.

Second seed Andre Agassi moved closer to his sixth title at this event with a 7-6 (7-4), 7-5 victory over fellow American Jan-Michael Gambill. Agassi improved to 47-6 lifetime at this tournament.

The 33-year-old Agassi has won 11 of 13 matches against Gambill.
