Ex-boxer Watson gets royal honor

LONDON, Feb. 12 (UPI) -- Brain-damaged former boxer Michael Watson was able to walk to Britain's Queen Elizabeth to accept a knighthood, London's The Sun reported Thursday.

The 38-year-old described receiving his Member of the British Empire designation as "the pinnacle of my life," which has been extremely difficult since his massive head injury in a fight with Chris Eubank in 1991.

Doctors told Watson he would never walk again, but he overcame the paralysis and can now walk, albeit slowly.

Wearing a top hat and tails, Watson approached the queen slowly. She called him a "remarkable" man and thanked him for his work with disabled athletes and for setting good examples.

Among his accomplishments was completing London's 26-mile marathon last year over six days of determined walking.
