SAN JOSE, Calif., Feb. 10 (UPI) -- American Jan-Michael Gambill beat eighth-seeded South African Wayne Ferreira, 6-7 (12-14), 7-6 (7-5), 6-1, Monday in the first round of the Siebel Open.
Gambill, who survived a match point in the second set, beat Ferreira for the first time in four encounters. He reached the semifinals here in 2001 and 2002.
Ferreira, who resides in nearby Berkeley and serves as a volunteer assistant coach at Cal-Berkeley, was a semifinalist at Sydney last month.
Fourth seed Taylor Dent ended play Monday night with an easy, 6-1, 6-4 triumph over fellow American Paul Goldstein.
