COLORADO SPRINGS, Feb. 5 (UPI) -- Former Connecticut star Sue Bird Thursday became the ninth member of the U.S. Women's Olympic basketball team.
It will be the first Olympic appearance for Bird, who led Connecticut to a pair of national championships and was a member of the U.S. team that won the gold medal at the 2002 World Championships.
Bird was the top overall pick in the 2002 WNBA draft by the Seattle Storm and is a two-time league All-Star. She averaged 12.4 points and 6.5 points for the Storm in 2003.
Already named to the team were Tamika Catchings, Shannon Johnson, Lisa Leslie, DeLisha Milton-Jones, Katie Smith, Dawn Staley, Sheryl Swoopes and Tina Thompson. The remaining three members of the team will be picked at a later date.
The Summer Olympics take place in Athens, Greece, Aug. 13-29.
