Colleges sign high school football players

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 4 (UPI) -- USC and LSU, which shared college football's national title last month, both landed high school stars Wednesday on National Signing Day.

It was the first day high school players could make binding commitments with schools.

USC signed wide receiver Fred Davis of Toledo, Ohio; offensive lineman Jeff Byers of Loveland, Colorado and defensive lineman Jeff Schweiger of San Jose.

"We don't put a ceiling on their ability," USC Coach Pete Carroll said. "We've had a lot of freshmen play."

LSU signed two prominent in-state players inEarly Doucet of St. Martinsville and defensive lineman Marlon Favorite of Harvey.

"We're basically full," Coach Lou Saban said. "I think we're ready to start on next year."

Another of the big winners was Miami, which added local linebacker Willie Williams. The Hurricanes received more good news when running back Andrew Johnson backed out of his verbal commitment with Pittsburgh and signed with Miami.
