NHL: Tampa Bay 5, Atlanta 2

TAMPA, Fla., Jan. 31 (UPI) -- Fredrik Modin scored a pair of first-period goals Saturday as Tampa Bay defeated Atlanta, 5-2, for its fifth straight win.

Modin tipped defenseman Darryl Sydor's point shot past Pasi Nurminen on the power play 11:18 into the game and beat the goaltender with a snap shot from the left faceoff dot with 38 seconds to go in the period to make it 2-0.

It was the third multi-goal game of the season for Modin, who recorded his second career hat trick Jan. 3 in a 6-1 win over Philadelphia. He added an assist in this one.

Brad Richards chipped in a goal and an assist for the Lightning, who recorded a team-record 23 shots in the first period.

Rookie Zdenek Blatny and Shawn McEachern scored for the Thrashers, whose winless streak was extended to five games (0-4-1).
