NHL: Detroit 5, New Jersey 2

DETROIT, Jan. 29 (UPI) -- Defenseman Mathieu Schneider scored a power-play goal and set up another by Tomas Holmstrom Thursday night, giving Detroit a 5-2 win over New Jersey.

The Red Wings thus spoiled what might have been Igor Larionov's last trip to Joe Louis Arena.

Larionov returned to Detroit for the first time since signing with the Devils last September. He spent parts of eight seasons with the Red Wings and was a member of three Stanley Cup championship teams.

The 43-year-old logged 16 minutes Thursday night, but did not figure in the scoring as Detroit made the most of its chances en route to its second win in seven games.

Schneider broke a 1-1 tie with 3:56 left in the opening period, beating Martin Brodeur with a slap shot from the edge of the left faceoff circle for his 10th goal of the season and fifth in as many games.
