Raich wins record third slalom victory

SCHLADMING, Austria, Jan. 27 (UPI) -- Austria's Benjamin Raich posted a record third World Cup slalom win Tuesday to reclaim the lead in the overall and slalom standings.

Entering the second run 1.02 seconds behind leader Bode Miller of the United States, Raich delivered a strong, balanced effort. He posted a two-run aggregate of 1 minute, 41.67 seconds.

Raich watched anxiously for the last two skiers to run. Croatia's Ivica Kostelic crashed out seconds later, flipping into the air and landing on his hip, a gate slamming into his spine, and injuring his shoulder.

Miller was forced to watch the situation unfold below and waited as Kostelic was loaded onto a sled and taken down the icy slope by medics.

Miller was unable to preserve his lead and ended up fourth in 1:42.37. The American has not won a slalom race in two years.
