NFL conference title games on Sunday

FOXBORO, Mass., Jan. 18 (UPI) -- The NFL's conference championships will be decided Sunday and by day's end, there will be two new combatants in the Super Bowl.

In the AFC, it will be Indianapolis at New England while Philadelphia hosts Carolina in the NFC. Both games are rematches of Nov. 30 regular-season contests, when the Patriots topped the Colts, 38-34, and the Eagles beat the Panthers, 25-16.

New England (15-2), which owns the NFL's best record and a 13-game winning streak, is seeking its second Super Bowl title in three years under Coach Belichick.

The Colts are led by co-MVP quarterback Peyton Manning, who guided them to a mark of 14-4. The Colts' Hunter Smith has yet to punt in this year's playoffs.

The Colts walloped Denver, 41-10, and eased past Kansas City, 38-31.

Philadelphia is seeking its first trip to the Super Bowl since 1980, but is playing in its third straight NFC title game.

The Panthers, who are just nine years old, will seek their first Super Bowl berth.
