CANBERRA, Australia, Jan. 17 (UPI) -- Paola Suarez saved five match points against third-seeded Silvia Farina Elia of Italy on Saturday to win the Canberra Women's Classic.
The second-seeded Argentine edged Farina Elia, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), in 2 hours, 36 minutes to earn her fourth WTA Tour title.
Suarez never had beaten Farina Elia in three meetings, also having played a tight match at Wimbledon last year.
Farina Elia fell behind, 3-0, in the first set but won the next six games.
Suarez bounced back in the second set, taking a 5-1 lead. Farina Elia pulled within 4-5 before Suarez served out the second set to even the match.
Farina Elia broke serve in the sixth game and held for a 5-2 lead. Suarez saved one match point at 5-3 and four more in the tiebreaker.
